If you have naturally thin lips, you’ve probably wondered whether a lip flip before and after thin lips result will actually solve your concern, or just make a small difference that’s hard to notice. This is one of the most honest questions in aesthetics, because a lip flip doesn’t work the same way for someone with a thin upper lip as it does for someone with a gummy smile. In this guide, we’ll walk through exactly what a lip flip can and can’t do for small lips, how it compares to filler, fat grafting, and lip lift surgery, and how to set expectations that match your specific lip anatomy.

Quick Answer: Does a Lip Flip Work for Thin Lips?
A lip flip can create a subtle fuller appearance for thin lips by relaxing the muscle around the upper lip so more pink tissue shows, especially while smiling or talking. However, it doesn’t add physical volume, so people with very thin lips or minimal lip tissue often see only a modest change compared to lip filler.
Key Takeaways
- A lip flip before and after thin lips comparison usually shows a subtle, not dramatic, difference, since no volume is added.
- The treatment works by relaxing the orbicularis oris muscle, letting the upper lip roll outward instead of tucking in.
- People with very little lip tissue to begin with tend to see less noticeable results than those with a moderately thin but still present lip.
- Lip filler, fat grafting, and lip lift surgery are the main alternatives when a lip flip alone isn’t enough for small lips.
- Full results typically appear by day 10 to 14 and last around 8 to 12 weeks.
- Combining a lip flip with filler is common for thin-lipped patients who want both shape refinement and added volume.
What Is a Lip Flip? A Quick Refresher
A lip flip is a non-surgical treatment using a small dose of Botox, Dysport, or a similar neuromodulator, injected into the orbicularis oris, the muscle circling the mouth. Relaxing this muscle lets the upper lip roll outward during movement, revealing more of the pink vermilion tissue. Importantly, no filler substance is added, so the lip’s actual size and volume stay the same; only its position and visibility change.
This distinction matters most for people with thin or small lips, since the treatment reshapes what you already have rather than adding to it.
Can a Lip Flip Actually Fix Thin Lips?
This is the honest question most competitor pages avoid answering directly. A lip flip can improve the appearance of thin lips in specific ways, but it has real limitations worth understanding before you book.
What a Lip Flip Can Do for Thin Lips
- Make a thin upper lip look slightly fuller by rolling it outward
- Reduce the “disappearing lip” effect some people notice when smiling
- Improve the definition of the vermilion border (the edge between skin and lip)
- Offer a low-commitment way to test a subtle change before considering filler
What a Lip Flip Cannot Do for Thin Lips
- Add physical volume or size to the lip
- Create a dramatically plumper look
- Meaningfully change lips that have very little tissue to begin with
- Provide a permanent or long-lasting result
If your main concern is that your lips look genuinely small in every expression, not just thin when smiling, a lip flip alone is unlikely to deliver the transformation you’re picturing.
Lip Flip Before and After Thin Lips: What Changes You’ll Actually See
| Lip Type | Typical Result From a Lip Flip |
| Moderately thin upper lip | Noticeably fuller-looking lip, especially while smiling |
| Very thin lip with minimal tissue | Subtle change; may be hard to notice |
| Thin lip with a gummy smile | Fuller look plus reduced gum visibility while smiling |
| Small lips overall (upper and lower) | Modest improvement to upper lip only, since lip flips typically target the upper lip |
Lip Flip Before and After Thin Lips Timeline
| Stage | What to Expect |
| Day 0–2 | Little to no visible change; possible minor swelling |
| Day 3–7 | Upper lip begins rolling outward, especially when smiling |
| Day 10–14 | Full results visible; the most accurate time for “after” photos |
| Week 6–8 | Results stable and settled |
| Month 3–4 | Effect gradually fades as the muscle regains normal movement |
Lip Flip on Small Lips: Before and After
Small lips and thin lips are not quite the same thing. Thin lips show very little pink (vermilion) when you smile, while small lips are short from corner to corner or low in overall size. A lip flip helps most when the upper lip rolls inward or disappears when you smile. It does not make a small mouth wider or add real volume.
| What you notice before | What usually changes after (about 2 weeks) |
| Upper lip almost disappears when smiling | More of the upper lip stays visible when you smile |
| Little pink showing at rest | A slight outward roll makes the upper lip look a bit fuller |
| Lips look small overall | Overall size stays about the same, so the change is subtle |
| Wish for clearly bigger lips | A lip flip alone will not get you there; filler adds the volume |
If your lips are both small and thin, many injectors suggest starting with a lip flip to see how much the shape alone helps, then adding a small amount of filler if you still want more size. Our lip flip with filler guide explains how the combination works.
Lip Flip vs. Other Options for Small Lips
Since a lip flip has real limitations for thin lips, it helps to understand the full range of options rather than assuming it’s the only choice.
| Treatment | How It Works | Best For | Duration | Downtime |
| Lip flip | Relaxes muscle to roll lip outward | Mild thinness, gummy smile, subtle refinement | 8–12 weeks | Minimal |
| Lip filler | Adds hyaluronic acid volume directly | Noticeable volume increase, reshaping | 6–12 months | Minimal, some swelling/bruising |
| Lip fat grafting | Transfers your own fat into the lip | Long-lasting, natural-feeling volume | Long-lasting, some fat reabsorption | 1–2 weeks |
| Lip lift surgery | Surgically shortens the space between nose and lip | Permanent improvement in lip show at rest | Permanent (aging still occurs) | Days to weeks |
A lip flip and lip filler are sometimes combined, using the flip to refine shape and the filler to add the volume a lip flip can’t provide on its own.
Who Is a Good Candidate for a Lip Flip With Thin Lips?
Good candidates typically have:
- A moderately thin upper lip rather than an extremely thin one
- A lip that thins out or disappears specifically when smiling
- A desire for subtle refinement before committing to filler
- Realistic expectations that the change will be gentle, not dramatic
A lip flip is likely not enough if you:
- Have very little visible lip tissue at rest
- Want a noticeably plumper look in every expression
- Are looking for a long-term or permanent solution
- Have thinning related to significant volume loss, where filler or fat grafting tends to be more effective
A licensed injector, ideally a physician, nurse injector, or physician assistant with aesthetic training, should assess your specific lip anatomy before recommending a treatment plan. This article is for general information and isn’t a substitute for a professional consultation.
Step-by-Step: What Happens During a Lip Flip Appointment
- Consultation: The injector examines your lip thickness, tissue volume, and smile pattern to determine if a lip flip alone will meet your goals.
- Cleansing: The upper lip area is cleaned before injection.
- Marking: Injection points are marked along the upper lip border, typically 4 to 6 spots.
- Injection: A fine needle delivers small units of neurotoxin into the muscle, usually taking 5 to 10 minutes.
- Aftercare guidance: You’re advised on what to avoid over the next 24 to 48 hours.
- Follow-up: Many providers check in around 2 weeks to assess whether filler or another option should be added.
Aftercare Tips for the Best Results
- Avoid rubbing or applying pressure to the lips for several hours after treatment.
- Skip strenuous exercise for the rest of the day to reduce swelling risk.
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours to lower bruising risk.
- Wait the full 10 to 14 days before judging your final result.
- Take photos at rest and while smiling around day 10 to 14 to fairly assess the change.
Common Mistakes People With Thin Lips Make
- Expecting filler-level volume from a treatment that doesn’t add any volume.
- Judging results too early, before the full 10 to 14 day timeline has passed.
- Assuming a lip flip works the same for everyone, when very thin lips typically show a subtler change than moderately thin ones.
- Skipping the consultation and not discussing whether filler or a combination approach would better match their goals.
- Choosing a provider based on price alone rather than experience specifically treating thin or small lips.
Lip Flip Before and After Thin Lips: Cost Overview
| Treatment | Typical Price Range |
| Lip flip | $100–$350 |
| Lip filler (per syringe) | $500–$1,200+ |
| Lip fat grafting | Higher upfront cost, surgical fees apply |
| Lip lift surgery | Higher upfront cost, surgical fees apply |
Pricing varies significantly by provider experience, geographic location, and the specific technique or product used.
Pros and Cons for Thin Lips Specifically
Pros:
- Low-cost, low-commitment way to test subtle enhancement

- Can be a helpful first step before committing to filler
Cons:
- Limited effectiveness for very thin lips with little tissue
- Doesn’t address overall lip size, only shape and lip roll
- Temporary, requiring repeat treatment every 2 to 3 months
- May leave patients with significant thinness feeling underwhelmed
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a lip flip make my thin lips look noticeably bigger? Typically not dramatically. A lip flip changes how your existing lip tissue rolls and sits, but it doesn’t add volume, so very thin lips usually see a modest, not dramatic, change.
What’s the difference between a thin upper lip and generally small lips? A thin upper lip usually refers to reduced lip roll or visible pink tissue in that lip specifically, while small lips can mean reduced volume in both the upper and lower lip. A lip flip mainly addresses the upper lip.
Should I get a lip flip or lip filler if I have thin lips? If your main goal is noticeable volume, filler is usually more effective. If you want subtle refinement or are unsure about committing to filler, a lip flip can be a lower-risk starting point.
How long do lip flip results last on thin lips? Results generally last 8 to 12 weeks before the muscle-relaxing effect wears off and the lip returns to its resting position.
Can I combine a lip flip with filler for better results on thin lips? Yes, many providers combine both, using the flip to refine shape and the filler to add the volume a lip flip alone can’t provide.
Is a lip flip a permanent solution for thin lips? No. Results are temporary, and only options like fat grafting or lip lift surgery offer long-lasting or permanent changes to lip appearance.
Will people be able to tell I’ve had a lip flip? Results are designed to look natural and subtle. Most people notice a fuller-looking lip, particularly while smiling, without an obviously “done” appearance.
Is a lip lift a better option than a lip flip for very thin lips? A lip lift can be a better option if your main concern is limited lip show at rest, since it permanently shortens the space between the nose and upper lip, rather than relying on temporary muscle relaxation.
How many units of Botox are used in a lip flip for thin lips? Most lip flips use around 4 to 6 units, though your provider may adjust slightly based on your lip anatomy and goals.
Does a lip flip work on the lower lip too? Lip flips are usually performed on the upper lip, though some providers offer a modified approach for the lower lip depending on individual anatomy.
Is a lip flip painful for people with thin lips? Discomfort is generally minimal and brief. Many providers apply a topical numbing cream beforehand to improve comfort.
What happens if a lip flip doesn’t give me enough of a change? If results feel too subtle, your provider can discuss adding lip filler, exploring fat grafting, or considering a lip lift for a more noticeable, longer-lasting outcome.
Summary: Setting Realistic Expectations for Thin Lips
A lip flip before and after thin lips result tends to be subtle rather than dramatic, since the treatment reshapes existing lip tissue instead of adding volume. It works best for moderately thin lips, a lip that disappears when smiling, or as a low-commitment first step before considering filler, fat grafting, or a lip lift. If your lips are very thin with minimal tissue, it’s worth discussing volume-adding options with your provider so your expectations match what a lip flip can realistically deliver.
